Bibek Debroy is a visionary economist who has written extensively on economic growth covering the entire gamut from legal reforms to railway reforms. He was Consultant to the Department of Economic Affairs and worked on Legal Adjustments and Reforms for Globalising the Economy project by Finance Ministry and UNDP. He was the rapporteur for implementation in the Commission on Legal Empowerment of the Poor. Not only at the centre, even states have been beneficiaries of his expertise including Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir and Gujarat. He Chaired the Committee to restructure Indian Railways. With more than 100 books and many more in the pipe, Debroy is a teacher at heart and believes in decentralisation and inclusive growth with the last person in the queue. He believes that the national income of any country is measured by the productivity of its citizens in the working age group.

Dr Bibek Debroy is an economist and has made significant contributions to game theory, economic theory, income and social inequalities, poverty, law reforms, railway reforms and Indology among others.

He was educated in Ramakrishna Mission School, Narendrapur; Presidency College, Kolkata; Delhi School of Economics and Trinity College, Cambridge. Presently, he is Chairman, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM).

Dr Debroy has authored several books, papers and popular articles, has been the Consulting Editor of Indian financial and other newspapers. He has been a member of the National Manufacturing Competitive Council from November 2004 to December 2009. He was the Chairman of a Committee set up by the Chief Minister of Jharkhand to recommend a development plan for the State. He has been a Member of the Chief Minister’s Economic Advisory Council in Rajasthan.

He has worked in Presidency College, Kolkata (1979-83), Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune (1983-87); Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Delhi (1987-93); as the Director of a Ministry of Finance/UNDP project on legal reforms (1993-98); Department of Economic Affairs (1994-95); National Council of Applied Economic Research (1995-96); Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies (1997-2005); PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (2005-06); and Centre for Policy Research (2007-2015). He has authored/edited several books, papers and popular articles and has also been a Consulting/Contributing Editor with several newspapers.
